As a fan of both authors on Twitter, I thought this was a quick, practical and excellent read. Within each short chapter were a few immediate take aways to improve upon any administrators’ practice. There are 4 things that I will begin to do differently Monday based on this book. Lastly, this is a great resource to continually review during a year when we get so caught up in ‘what’ we do and often forget ‘why’ we are doing it.
As a mom and as a principal...My favorite Chapter was 24 - We Would Like Parents to Be Involved at School, But We Need Parents to Be Involved at Home. A grounding book for all principals. Thank you for writing a quick, thoughtful, daily read.
A must read for any educational leader! Such a good read, could not put it down. Very inspiring!
This book truly is "essential" for school leaders - specifically principals but is applicable to many other educational leadership positions. Steele and Whitaker lay out very easy to digest "truths" that remind school leaders of the important work to be done with students and the critical role they play in cultivating a positive school culture. I enjoyed the book so much that I bought copies for each of my two assistant principals!
I connected with this book instantly. Whitaker and Steele share their essential truths for how to successfully lead a school by focusing on what matters. This book is versatile and could be used as something your admin team reads a chapter weekly or use it individually for personal reflection and growth. Leading a building is all about how you treat the people....students and staff. This will be a book that I read every year if not more. Quick read. Loved it!
Essential truths captures the simple essence of leadership. Although principals have enormous job Mr. Steele and Mr. Whitaker manage to keep the message of honesty, compassion, and empathy a central theme to the true heart of leadership.
