Upton Sinclair wrote about the amazing benefits of fasting over 100 years ago! He was ridiculed then, just as those that are writing about the benefits of now. People, people, people...In a very short time, I used fasting to lose 30 pounds and cure my type 2 diabetes. My doctor, just last week, confirmed something I already knew. She said, “You are no longer diabetic.” I continue to use fasting to stay healthy. So, does it work? Yea, it works! If one would research this subject, they would find the upsides are almost without end. If everyone would take up fasting as a lifestyle, obesity would be gone…type 2 diabetes would be gone…Alzheimer’s would be gone…high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and even most cancers would be gone!

I would sometimes worry when I would miss a meal like, I would faint or, succumb to malnourishment. But, Upton Sinclair presents an enlightening education to us all and, emphasizes that we do not need the standard 3-meals a day. In fact he recommends for optimal health to fast and eat LESS not more as we have been taught and bombarded with advertising and misinformation to eat to our delight then, when we have gained too-much then, pour our dollars into the billion dollar a year weight-loss/diet industry. It's insane. In regards to food, LESS really is MORE.

This is the most comprehensive book on water fasting that I've read. This book coupled with Joel Fuhrman's, "Fasting and Eating for Health" will give you as much information as you need before making the journey, or just learning about the cures it contains. I completed a five day fast and ate clean and healthy per Dr. Fuhrman's suggestions for two weeks and then completed a 27 day water fast. It was a wonderful experience and the cures are miraculous. I was having knee and ankle problems, was having trouble walking with ease, which it cured. I also had terrible itching constantly and two loose teeth. The teeth are rock solid now and the itching gone, thank goodness.It makes such sense that we would have a way to naturally cure ourselves without pharmaceuticals to only cure symptoms. Any symptom that arose while on the fast, or questions I had, were available in this book. It was written in the 1920's when this "cure" was much more prevalent. It is ashame that it is not more incorporated into our lifestyle today.In sum Sinclair's book, coupled with Dr. Fuhrman's, is extremely comprehensive.

This book was written as a way to address a fasting article Mr. Sinclair had written previously and includes letters from people who tried his fast based on that original article. Many found relief from their ailments and had newfound joy in their life.I've been researching fasting and its healing powers for awhile now. It was good to read of personal accounts from 100+ years ago. I am still working my way up to a full fast, but years of habitual eating/snacking is making it a hard task.Overall it is an interesting read and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about fasting.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in intermittent fasting. This book was written before a lot of studies were done on it, and shows that many people can benefit from it. At the end of the book there are testimonial letters that show people’s first hand experiences. It even has a mention of the carnivore diet which was really cool. Obviously some things have changed but it seems like Upton Sinclair was onto something! Quick read.

Good information. This goes well with the documentary The Science of fasting, on amazon prime. These pages look like photocopies of an old article.

The main thing to keep in mind is that this book was written about a hundred years ago. Our research, not just in fasting, but in the way the body works, has evolved A LOT in the past hundred years. This should not be the first or only book you buy on fasting. What I loved and appreciated about this book is how fasting worked for so many people and how there were actually fasting institutions and fasting floors in medical institutions back then where you can go to be fasted. If you, like me, are already into fasting and have already read the more current books and articles on the subject, you may actually appreciate this book as much as I did. It totally blew my mind how much hasn't changed in a hundred years and how much is still relevant today. For current info look at Jason Fung's Complete Guide to Fasting.

There are some printing errors (as was indicated in the preface) but for the most part this was a fluid read; and, if one reads with full attention, the errors are easily found and pieced together. I am already an avid "faster" but I found this book to be very informative and further indication that we are all biologically unique and individual so we must tailor our fasting and feeding experience to suit our biological individuality. I also found it interesting how humans are struggling with many of the same health problems now as we were over 100 years ago--this is true despite all of the technological and medical advances we have seen in the past century. As Sinclair succinctly states, and I completely believe, we eat too much food, and, especially too much processed food. We need to eat less and fast more!
