I am in a cross roads in my career and currently looking for work do to a failed attempt in another field. As I progressed in my professional career I unintentionally moved into business analyst roles doing various things such as data analysis, market research, process improvement, reporting, business intelligence, management consultancy but never actually being a formal Business Analyst with a structured body of knowledge as outlined in the BABOK.Because of the lack of structure I end up getting bored working as a jack of all trades BA and tried a career move into Financial Planing and it did not work well and I quickly realised that it is not for me and that I am a natural business analyst. In this context I believe Laura's book was crucial for me to reflect and see what are the options for me as far as career planning goes. The book is very well written and it gives enormous clarity of what is a Business Analyst career with all its nuances, types and sub types. What one need to look inside to decide what is the next move. The book is full of practicable and actionable advice on doing self analysis to aid you to decide what is best for you and also to assist you in putting a plan of action for what you want. Even the book will give all you need to decide if BA career is or isn't for you.Even if you decide that BA is not for you still the book is relevant as far as career planing is concerned.I am very grateful I got my hands on this book and I highly recommend. If you want to know what BA is all about and how the profession is like and what it takes to become the best? This book is definitively for you.
There is no better resource out there for making a career transition to become a Business Analyst regardless of the job you are transitioning from! If you do all of the exercises outlined in the book and utilize the additional tips and resources provided at Laura's website you will be better prepared for a BA role than many others.
Laura's dedication to business analysts seeking advice to start or transition careers is truly evident in this book, as it is in her overall activity in the industry. I strongly believe in her approach and can see it represented will in this new edition. The chapters included here provide clear illustration of what business analysis looks like to a newcomer as a profession and in various roles, which delivers knowledge for evaluating and making intelligence-based career choices. Even more valuable is the break down of transitional skills that people often have without realization, and I've not seen anyone do this better. My favorite part of the book is the section that covers reframing one's current perspectives, because it removes the clutter of working to reveal that people have significant abilities that simply need to be channeled differently into ready-to-apply skills in a new profession.Disclaimer. I am mentioned in the book
I have found this book to be an excellent and practical guide to the path of the BA and some steps to get one moving towards that goal. Laura has a gift for shooting straight and not overpopulation the book with too much esoteric jargon. This is not a guide to BA practices. There are plenty such resources. Rather, this is a practical overview of the profession as a whole, with advice on career transitioning that I find humble and honest. Highly recommended.
I enjoyed reading this book. Brandenburg's tidbits of encouragement, delicately placed throughout the book, are uplifting and motivational, especially for someone like me, lacking professional experience and doubting my qualifications at times. The interactive aspect of the book is also pleasant. The exercises helped me to stay engaged and focused on the subject matter, and allowed me to critically evaluate my interest in becoming a business analyst. Reading this book helped me to affirm my interest in becoming a professional Business Analyst.
This second edition to the book is even better than the first! Laura has a way of writing that is easily understood by people interested in Business Analysis no matter what their level. Some books you read once, this is one you will find value in reading again and again as you progress throughout your career.I recommend this book to anybody who is thinking about a Business Analysis career. In fact, I recommend reading this book as the second thing anybody looking into the career. Why second? Only because Laura's website http://bridging-the-gap.com is my first recommendation. While there are other books which give more in-depth details about specific areas of Business Analysis, this book is the best for a general overview. While this book is a must-have for anybody new to the field of Business Analysis, I also recommend this book to mid and senior level BAs. There's something about reading through the book which generates the sense of excitement and adventure that you first felt when stepping into this field. In addition, the exercises are something I recommend every BA go through periodically to stay in touch with your "BA-ness."
I learned a lot. I knew nothing about business analysis when I bought the book besides the title. Yet the author clarified career paths to take, typical repsonsibilities, and how to evaluate your current position. I did not know for instance, that a lot of jobs have analyst skills and competencies already built into them on a daily basis. I plan to use them in my next transition. I highly recommend this book. It covered nearly everything I would ever want to know.
Awesome book to learn the fundamentals to BA. I wish Laura can pick few tools utilized by the BA and writes a book about the topics as a How-to-manual.
