My daughters are 3 and 6, and Ben Hatke's books are recent discoveries in our house, and we picked this one up after raving success with "Nobody Likes a Goblin." "Julia's House for Lost Creatures" was instantly another favorite, we've read it dozens of times in the week since we got it, and it's here to stay. I love the beautiful illustrations and all the strange and wondrous creatures, but most of all I love Julia.Too many children's books have a protagonist who either doesn't know how to say "yes" or doesn't know how to say "no." Those in the first category are depicted as selfish and used to make points for teaching moments, those in the second are shown as kind and benevolent, but I love that Julia is both able to invite all the creatures to her house and also put her foot down when things aren't going right, figure out on her own how to solve the problem, and get things to work out so everyone's happy. Julia is the sort of spunky little girl I'd like to see in lots more stories.We'll definitely be looking for more picture books from Ben Hatke in the future.
A couple of years ago, I needed to buy a present for my niece, and I wanted that present to be a book. I didn’t (and still don’t) really know anything about kids books. Fortunately, around that time, I happened to read through a few Goodreads reviews written by the fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss. He gave a children’s book a glowing review. That book was Julia’s House for Lost Creatures. I bought it for my niece.She loved it.After she opened the present, she asked me to read it with her. She sat on my lap, and I read the book to her. The illustrations of fantastical creatures — some based on folklore, some original — fired up her imagination. I listened to her theories about ghost whales and goblins and monsters. Years later, it’s still my niece’s favorite book. She just did a project with it for second grade.I could go on about how the book is cool because it shows a young girl in charge, the importance of sharing chores, and non-violent problem-solving. But whatever. The really important thing is that my niece liked the present I got her. I thought maybe readers of this review might have children or need to get a present for a kid. If you do, I’d really encourage you to check out this book.
This has nothing at all to do with Zita. The illustrations are charming (as in Zita), but it's a super short (and sweet) story about a girl that collects creatures that wander through. Only 3 stars because it's kind of boring, we never seem to want to read it.If if suddenly goes back into heavy circulation, I'll up my review. I doubt it.
I first found Ben Hatke when looking for comics for my pre-reader daughter. I had some high standards for girls in comics and subject matter and let me say that Zita the Space Girl nailed it. So after introducing my daughter to Zita and finding it a wonderful answer to my search for young reader appropriate comics, Julias House for Lost Creatures came out.I love this children's book for the illustrations and the idea of household chores, but there is also a harder to describe whimsical feel to the story that makes it easy to read many times like other classics. Julia's home feels more settled and grounded as the story unfolds. I am very happy to share this book with my children. At this point I would whole hearted recommend everything Ben Hatke has written.
First it was “Little Robot,†an absolute delight of a graphic novel that even a four year old can “read.†Great story, good lessons, and attention-grabbing illustrations.Then came “Julia’s House for Lost Creatures.†Another delight. A simpler tale but with magical illustrations and another wonderful moral at the end.We — grandma and young grandsons — can’t wait to read more! Keep ‘em coming, Mr Hatke.
I bought this book for my almost-seven-year-old son, who is not terribly interested in anything without wheels. Apparently monsters/creatures fit the bill. He really liked the book, and he was impressed I knew the names of so many monsters (though folletti threw me for a loop). But I think I bought this book for me as much as for him. The book is beautiful, and after I'd sent my son off to bed, I read through it again. The watercolors are vibrant, and the art is expressive, graceful, and so darn cute. As for the text, it's a message about living together, everyone doing their fair share, and helping out (and it's never preachy). It's slightly reminiscent of Bill Watterson in its beauty, simplicity, and wistfulness, but the author definitely has a style all his own. I guess it's time to look into his other books. (Thanks to Geek Mom for turning me on to this one.)
I'm so surprised at how levels of wonderful this book is! I bought it for my LO, thinking she might read it in a 6 months or so but she finds the book fascinating! The characters have really sparked her imagination, and while she doesn't get all of the subtleties about the story, she's learning so much more each time we read the book together. The story is lovely and fantastical and educational. The illustrations are gorgeous. And the concept of the stories are just so cute! I highly recommend it, even if you get it for a young toddler!
This is one of my 4 year old boys favorite book. It’s a nice simple story about Julia’s house and all the wonderful creatures that come to live there. Amazing art and a lot of fun concepts.
