Melissa Jonson-Reid, PhD, MSW, is Ralph & Muriel Pumphrey Professor of Social Work and directs the Center for Violence and Injury Prevention at Washington University. Prior to academia, she administered school-based programming for youth in foster care and worked as a domestic violence counselor. Her work focuses on understanding how children's policy and services impact longer term outcomes as well as innovations to existing programs to prevent maltreatment. Brett Drake, PhD, MSW, is Professor of Social Work at Washington University. Prior to academia, he worked as a child protection worker in a child welfare agency. His work focuses on the epidemiology of child maltreatment, maltreatment reporting and the response to reports, and the intersection of poverty and maltreatment.

This is an insightful book that surveys the most current research on child maltreatment in an engaging, uplifting manner. Given the nature of the subject matter, this book could easily have devolved into a series of depressing stories about child abuse or a boring summary of research studies, but it is neither of those things. Instead, what we have here is a thought-provoking book that should be of interest to child advocacy professionals as well as the general public.Part of what makes this book hard to put down is that it frequently mixes up the storytelling and topics. For example, this book weaves together:--History (the story of Mary Ellen, and how the general public came to be concerned about child maltreatment as a social issue)--Research (it summarizes the latest findings and points you to resources where you can learn more, but doesn't get bogged down in the details)--Folk tales and children's stories (I never knew the last line about the "old woman who lived in a shoe" mentioned whipping children)--Finances (the substantial cost of dealing with child maltreatment after it occurs, compared to the cost of preventing it in the first place)--Current events (the Adrian Peterson case, the Duggar family sexual abuse scandal, etc.)Thus, while you will learn about all the main topics of child maltreatment (there is a chapter on physical abuse, a chapter on sexual abuse, etc.) the authors, both of whom are experts in this field, use innovative ways to deliver the information. This is refreshing and is a style from which more academic researchers could certainly benefit.The book also contains an evenhanded discussion of Child Protective Services and suggests several areas for reform. The authors provide a glimpse of the future by mentioning the possibility of using data to predict which families would be most likely to mistreat their children. At the same time, they note the issues with privacy and longstanding debate regarding the rights of a child versus the rights of a parent.This is an outstanding book and makes a substantial contribution to the discussion regarding child maltreatment, which (as the authors note) is a topic that is not discussed frequently enough.
