What the author says makes good sense: women can, and do, test men. After reading the first couple of chapters, a lot of interactions that I had had with women -- interactions which I was wont to label as "irrational" -- started making perfect sense to me. The epiphany was awesome. A woman *will* continue to test you, and this is not restricted to the courtship stage; it will happen throughout one's life and -- though the frequency of these tests may go down -- test she will!As men, the mistake we often make is that we try to understand women using the same frame of reference that we use for judging other men and that's a recipe for disaster. The point is, this trait to test men is "burnt" in to women: that is how they have been created by the Maker. An analog to this idea would be the way we respond in a certain way when we see a beautiful woman: your reaction in such a situation is not something that you need to consciously learn, it is an automatic response to an attractive stimulus. And that's the whole point that the author tries to put across to the reader: the very fact that she is testing you implies that she has an interest in you; she wouldn't do that if she weren't.Men and women are different in their traits, and this is what makes our lives on this planet so much more fun, if were only to embrace these differences rather than fight them. My only regret is that I did not have access to a book like this when I was in my twenties. I can only look back now with regret and wonder about all the lost opportunities with women when, what I assumed to be a confrontation or even an attempt to put me off, were actually signs of her interest in me. The fact is, she wouldn't have been testing me if she weren't interested in me in the first place.
I've read this book for two reasons: to help me in my own fictional writing by assessing the male point of view and to see if it might be of value to my adult sons.I have to say, after nearly 43 years of marriage, that I can see the leader described by the author in my husband. I will also say that he passed all of my early congruence tests. However, the confidence tests were a different matter, leaving me with years and years of heart-breaking insecurities - even though these were without basis, I was left flailing about trying to anchor myself to ... anything. I felt undesirable, unloved, unneeded, unwanted, unnecessary. I constantly struggled to hang on. Looking back now, I can see how much of a waste all of those emotions were. I was miserable and surely he was too. Perhaps it could have been different if he had benefited from the insight of this author.To share this as well, I have absolutely seen evidence of domineering and manipulative woman throughout my life. The women I am referring to, as opposed to starting out that way, actually became that way by being paired with wussy men, men with low self-esteem, mean and dishonest men. It is shameful that more men can't reach the potential of their masculinity before they damage the women in their lives.I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read and easy to understand. From this woman's perspective, the author is offering very worthwhile advice that should be absorbed and applied.
Great book with real world for information for men's relationships with women. I only wish this book would have been written 35 years ago and I read it at that time. It would have saved me a lot of trouble, heartache, and pain as I blundered through three marriages. It was through those disasters I had to learn the hard way what was easily spelled out in this book. Married for the fourth time now and fifteen years into this marriage (happily), Bruce Bryans is exactly right on what women want from men and how men should conduct themselves with women whether in a relationship or marriage.
The most profound thing said in the book is, all a man's romantic, sweet, chivalry will go to waste on a woman, if she does not respect you FIRST.
This book absolutely resonates with me.The first book I read from Bruce Bryans was What Women Want in a Man which included ten characteristics of a nice guy. I found myself in about six of them. I followed that first book with Hold onto Your Nuts (Wayne Levine) and No More Mr. Nice Guy (Robert Glover). Those three books alone were instrumental in changing how I carried myself — with wonderful results.This book builds on what I have already learned and have experienced to be true. Some highlights for me:Identifies the three main test: Congruence, Compliance, and Commitment. Reinforces the need for us men to be our own men by living by your own standards and principles. He also writes about leading through vulnerability but keeping in mind that men shouldn't lean on women before we have successfully and consistently demonstrated that we are worthy of her support.I cannot recommend this book enough.
Must read book for every man. This book has changed the way I interact with my wife. After reading this book I can see through the behaviors to the reasons behind her tests. If you are married or dating or want to be. You must read this.
