About the Author
Thomas J. Osborne is Emeritus Professor of History at Santa Ana College, where he received the inaugural Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award. He earned his PhD in history from Claremont Graduate University and is the author and coauthor of several scholarly books, including "Empire Can Wait”: American Opposition to Hawaiian Annexation, 1893–1898 and Pacific Eldorado: A History of Greater California.

This is a gem of a book. Beautifully written, deeply informed, with so much to glean for today's times. Peter Douglas fought hard against moneyed interests, and did it with fierce intelligence and purpose. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to know about how to overcome monumental odds. So informative and inspiring.The book has an interesting structure, starting with Maria Ehlers (Douglas' mom) divorcing her husband, escaping Nazi Germany with her children, landing safely in Southern California. Her son Peter adopts a new last name for their fresh start and falls in love with the ocean in his adopted homeland.Having fallen in love with the ocean, the author then provides a more detailed look at Douglas' beloved coastline, including geological histories.With that background provided, the book shares the clashes between California cultures in the 60s between the Rachel Carson inspired environmentalists and surfers and the Governor Reagan era real estate developers and oil drillers. The echoes to today's times are clear and the author provides insight into the development of a culture that Douglas helped lead to success.Delving into Douglas' legislative and executive career, the drama of creating the Coastal Act bill and continuing to run the commission make the book entertaining even in the arcane parts. And those arcane parts are so much more interesting in today's times, because of the insight into the "horsetrading" and backstabbing that happens in the creation of policy.Put on a human scale, the breakdowns would seem hilarious and absurd if not for our modern reenactment of this. And the human scale is what also makes Douglas shine as a character in the book and as an inspiration for these times, even right down to his wonkishly inspiring mantra, "Be bold, eschew pusillanimity."
Coastal Sage was an excellent profile of Peter Douglas and his historic contributions to preserving the California coast, as well as providing public access to the coast. It was well written and well documented book. For many of us Northern Californians it was a powerful insight into the battles that occurred in Southern California to preserve the California coas for the public. After reading this book I was impressed with the power that one leader, ie, Peter Douglas can have in helping preserve the environment.
