What a wonderful book A MAD LOVE is! It is a perfect book for people who are curious about opera but may be apprehensive about taking the plunge. Or, for people like me, who love opera but whose knowledge of it can be, at times, spotty. Or just for people who want a global perspective of the history and power of opera. The book’s biggest strength is its conversational tone; it doesn’t read like one of those dry, footnote-heavy tomes that, sadly much of classical music reads like. No, this book feels like you are sitting across the table from her, having coffee, as she interestingly and humorously gives you a wonderful overview of the history of opera: its dramas, its hilarities and its passion. And because of its easy, enjoyable writing style, (under 250 pages) I read it in two short sittings. And I will read it again, I am sure. Highly recommended!
I have been a professional journalist for more than 40 years, specializing in covering cultural diversity around the world. But one huge blind spot for me has been opera. As a Christmas present, I received this book and immediately opened it to find the perfect introduction for my tastes. As a journalist herself (for the NYTimes among other media outlets), Schweitzer has that balance of factual breadth and engaging narrative that I really enjoy.In fact, I began watching filmed versions of some of the early operas mentioned in her opening chapters and I'm having a lot of fun learning about a multi-faceted realm of the arts that I had largely ignored for years. I am not a musician so I appreciate the author's care in explaining what are probably basic concepts for opera lovers—but are new to me.I look forward to enjoying more operas and re-reading portions of her book, along with them. For this new-to-opera lover of global culture, this is the perfect introduction.
I have started attending a few operas.I never cultivated a taste for the genre before. The book is helping me to be more conversant about it, and to better understand what I am watching.

This book is a wonderful read for persons such as myself. I would consider myself a novice opera enthusiast (think classical music listening during my commute, an opera every couple of years, and frequent ballet and modern dance concert goer). I've always wanted to learn more about this genre and Vivien Schweitzer's book is the perfect introduction for furthering one's understanding of opera's history and mechanics (can one use that word in the context of opera? - I'm clearly still a novice!). The author's conversational style and friendly tone make the material easy to digest. The book is very readable and became a favorite before bedtime. The narrative style weaves together opera vocabulary terminology, concepts related to the structure of opera, and interesting historical context all while telling the story of various composers and librettists (a new word I learned!) and describing audience and critic reception of the operas. I highly recommend this book. Bonus: love the Spotify companion playlist!
