The result is a fast-paced and fluffy pirate adventure, complete with talking porpoises, stinky rogues, possible cannibals, a flying crocodile, biting mermaids, and a much-sought-after trunk full of magical glowing green "starstuff." Ever hear of Zeus? Michelangelo? Attila the Hun? According to 14-year-old Molly Aster they all derived their powers from starstuff that occasionally falls to Earth from the heavens. On Earth, it is the Starcatchers' job to rush to the scene and collect the starstuff before it falls into the hands of the Others who use its myriad powers for evil. On board the ship Never Land, an orange-haired boy named Peter, the leader of a group of orphaned boys being sent off to work as servants in King Zarboff the Third's court, is puzzled by his shipmate Molly's fantastical story of starstuff, but it inextricably binds him to her. The downright goofy, modern 8-year-old boy humor sometimes clashes with an old-time pirate sensibility, and the rapid-fire dialogue, while well paced, is far from inventive. Still, the high-seas hijinks and desert-island shenanigans will keep readers turning the pages. Greg Call's wonderful black-and-white illustrations are deliciously old-fashioned and add plenty of atmosphere to a silly, swashbuckling story that shows us how Peter Pan came to fly and why he, and his story, will never get old. Grade 5-9–This prequel to Peter Pan refers as much to the 1953 animated Disney film as to J. M. Barrie's original play and novel. The early chapters introduce the archetypal antagonists: Peter, leader of a group of orphan boys being sent into slavery aboard the Never Land, and Black Stache, a fearsome pirate who commands a villainous crew. New characters include Molly Aster and her father. Molly, at 14, is an apprentice Starcatcher, a secret society formed to keep evildoers from obtaining "starstuff," magic material that falls to earth and conveys happiness, power, increased intelligence, and the ability to fly. Inevitably, the ships wreck off a tropical island and a trunk of starstuff is temporarily lost. Here, readers meet more familiar characters: the mermaids in their lagoon; the indigenous people who live in the jungle (modern versions of Barrie's redskins); and, of course, the crocodile. This is the first in the series. It is so good, I couldn't believe it. I couldn't put it down, and I'm a grandma! Adults will enjoy this thoroughly. Got it and the 2nd one in the series for a birthday present for my grand-daughter. I also got the audio CD's for both to accompany them with the narrator as Jim Dale. He is probably the best narrator you will ever hear. Audio along with a physical book is a good idea as the child can read along & hear the story at the same time. It teaches them to read faster, and develops the brain also.
I've been a huge fan of Peter Pan for a long as I can remember and this series answered one question for me that anything else written had yet to answer. How does a baby, who states he left his home the day he was born live in a place where he is not supposed to age, but ages anyway? Well, this book fully answered that question as well as gave an interesting new take on how Peter Pan came to be. I randomly found this book after reading The Child Thief and thought it would be fun to go on a Peter Pan kick since I am using the movie in my ELL class so we can talk about the idea of wanting to remain a child. I will be able to use parts of this book in the lesson, but more than anything, this book was a fun read.
I want to start by saying if you have listened to Jim Dale read the Harry Potter books, THIS BOOK IS A MUST for you. The book is certainly aimed at children. By at age 28 I still deeply enjoyed this book & you should too. This is a fantastic backstory to Peter Pan. I dont want to spoil any of the plot, but just know that it has a cast of characters that you will love & care about. Thank you Jim Dale for such a great read, you are the best!
I've been a fan of Dave Barry's humor column since it was still in print, so I decided to get this book to read to my kids. I couldn't put it down and read it to them in less than a month (over 400 pages!). I found myself wanting to read ahead when the kids weren't available to listen. Action, humor, and a well-developed storyline are all present from the first chapter. I'll be purchasing the next one in this series.
I loved the premise for this series, and once I came to know the award-winning Broadway show, I thought I'd finally get around to reading the first book. It's a very clever origin story, told through the perspective of several central characters - not just Peter. There are some twists and turns, but mostly there is a lot of heart. Even the coldest of characters have traits you come to love. It's an easy, quick read. Sometimes it just feels good to sit down and read something that flows with a vivid and assured pace. This story never slows down and leaves you wanting more. I just bought the second book!
BEST BOOK SERIES I'VE EVER READ!!!!!!I love this entire series. I swear, I could read it over and over and over and never get tired of it! The story goes that Peter is an orphan, going on a ship with basically pixie dust, if pixie dust did more than just make people fly. Along the way, he encounters some characters like a pirate, named Black Stache but soon to become Captain Hook, and Molly. I've never read the classic Peter Pan, but from the dedication, it sounded like a prequel to Peter Pan. And there is so much I love about this entire series that all I can really say is read it yourself and either agree or disagree with me that these books are awesome.
Peter and the Starcatchers is a very inventive, fun book for any age. if you've seen the Broadway play and expect it the book the be exactly like it, you might be disappointed... or you might like it just as much, as I did. the language is in keeping with a book from Barrie's time, tho not as overtly formal. the characters, especially Capt. Stache, are sometimes a bit over the top, but that's just more fun for me. Each of the short chapters ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, so they're perfect for reading before bedtime with children. You just want to read on and on! Molly is a great heroine (Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson both said they wrote this book for their daughters, so Molly is a strong heroine). Peter is clever and brave, and you can certainly see how he becomes Pan. Some of the violence in the latter half of the book took me a bit by surprise - the sharp-toothed "mermaids," pirates and Slank clubbing the children, etc. but, you know, that's what pirates did back then and Peter Pan had its own violence. I love a good swash and a bit of buckle, as Black Stache says in the stage show, so i found this book quite good. you also get lovely "back stories," like how the crocodile began to tick, how Hook lost his hand, and where John Darling got his top hat. That part almost made me cry.
I became a Peter Pan fan while reading this book. I love the authors' take on his origin. I also gave this book to my son's Language Arts tutor for Christmas. He was thrilled to know she loves to read it and it has become a favorite for her too.
